Different equipment you may be expected to wear on a building site, the dangers of carcinogenic particles and how to avoid them, carrying and disposing of waste soot without getting fines including details of licenses that are recommended, we also touch on working at heights. How to do a risk assessment as part of your everyday planning.

Chimney analysis

Here we start to look at the work you may be about to undertake as a Certified Chimney Sweep. We show you lots of pictures as to what you might see and how these things can affect the job, we talk about bird nest removal and the times where you can remove them. We discuss the procedures needed to make sure you have removed the nest fully to avoid potential repercussions, chimney stack placement including heights needed to conform to building regulations and for the compliance of thatch insurance companies, we discuss and show examples of over twenty different types of cowls, their uses including how you can remedy certain issues using the right cowl type.

Internal inspection

This section of your Certified Chimney Sweep Training course covers how to look for signs that the flue is not working correctly and how to fix these issues. We go through the different types of fuels and the deposits that you would get from them if they are burnt correctly and the deposits you would find if they are burnt incorrectly, we explain about flue construction and show you how to size open fires to suit the flues or vice versa, we discuss distances to combustible materials and explain how to resolve a potential fire risk. Different types of blockages are shown to let you know what you could expect to find during your everyday work and how they can damage the flues, we show the different stages of tar and how to remove them. During the training we also go through the dangers of carbon monoxide and how to spot that it is present.

Liner types and chimney sweeping

In this section of the course we discuss in depth the different flue types you may come across, and the different methods of cleaning them. Here we show the different types of liners and their uses as well as the way to tell if a flue is the correct way up, we then go on to selecting the correct rods and heads for power sweeping. we explain how to alter the direction and stiffness of the brush. Smoke testing is also taught in this section and we explain how extractor fans and other things can affect the draw of a chimney and if any problems are found then what it could be caused by and how to rectify it.

CCTV surveying, Sweeping certificates and Warning notices

This section covers the formats of reporting required and how to deliver the required information correctly.

Building Regulation (Part J)

This is the last section of day one, where we discuss in depth part J. We discuss the relevant parts of this document including fireplace recesses, air vents and how to calculate the ventilation requirement, permissible bends in flues, notice plates and where they can be situated, construction and superimposed hearths and sizes, the differences between register and enclosure plates, carbon monoxide alarms placements. We also go into other equipment needed for chimney sweeps.

Day two

Day Two is the practical day. It starts with the attendees being able to dismantle stoves and appliances to be able to gain access in order to start the process of sweeping. We also go into the home for a live practical sweeping. Each candidate will be sweeping a live flue, checking for faults, and CCTV inspecting the flue. Whilst you are dealing with the practical sweeping you will be shown different methods of dust control and the reasons why this is so important.
